Introduction
Obtaining a driving license is a crucial step in ensuring legal and safe driving on Indian roads. Whether you're preparing for your first license or renewal, this guide walks you through the entire process—from eligibility to final delivery—clearly and concisely.
Learner's License (LL): Entry-level temporary license, valid for 6 months.
Permanent Driving License (DL): Issued after passing tests, valid for 20 years or until age 50.
Renewal / Duplicate DL: For renewal or replacing a lost license.
Light Motor Vehicle (LMV): Minimum age 18 years.
Motorcycle with Gear: Minimum age 18; without gear, minimum 16.
Heavy Vehicles (Bus, Truck): Minimum age 20; must hold a DL for a year.
Must be physically and mentally fit.
Proof of Age: Aadhar Card, Birth Certificate, or Passport.
Proof of Address: Aadhar, Voter ID, Utility Bill, etc.
Passport-sized Photos (usually 2–3).
Medical Certificate (Form CMV-1) if required.
Learner’s License for permanent DL.
4.1 Learner's License
Visit Parivahan Sewa portal (parivahan.gov.in).
Navigate to "Apply Online" → "Driving License."
Fill in personal, address, and vehicle category details.
Upload scanned documents and photo.
Pay small test fee (~โน150).
Schedule a test.
Attend the test—generally a multiple-choice questionnaire.
Upon passing, the Learner's License gets issued immediately or after a few days.
4.2 Permanent Driving License
Hold the LL for at least 30 days.
Apply again via the portal or RTO office.
Upload or present additional documents.
Pay the DL issuance fee (~โน200–โน300).
Schedule a driving test—usually road test.
On passing, DL is issued—either laminated on the spot or dispatched.
Practice in a calm, empty area before the test.
Follow rules: mirror check, turn signals, left/right turns, parking, reverse.
Be confident and alert.
Use the Parivahan portal: → "Check Application Status" → Enter license reference number.
DL arrives by post or can be collected in person.
Keep a copy of digital DL via DigiLocker or Parivahan app.
Renew before expiry (or every 20 years).
Update address changes via form DL-5.
